Montelupo Fiorentino, besides being famous for its ceramic art, boasts a rich culinary tradition linked to local produce. The local cuisine is simple, genuine, and deeply rooted in the area. Dishes like bread soup, pasta and beans, and cipollata have reached us virtually unchanged, bearing witness to a gastronomic culture that requires time both to cook and to savor: the opposite of the fast food concept.
The village taverns still offer these traditional recipes today, often alongside more modern options, always made with local ingredients. In Montelupo, a meal is a moment to be enjoyed slowly, with authentic flavors, conversations, and good wine.
The gastronomic tradition is deeply linked to that of ceramics and the territory. An example is the Pan Bistugio, a typical sweet prepared by a well-known local pastry shop: born in the Renaissance, it is baked using a method similar to that used for ceramics.
Another iconic dish is Peposo, a robust and spicy meat recipe, slowly cooked in wine in earthenware pots. Also popular in Montelupo but originally from Impruneta, it was the meal of the “fornacini,” the brick kiln workers, even during the construction of Brunelleschi’s Dome in Florence.
Like every authentic corner of Tuscany, Montelupo Fiorentino is also proud of its oil and wine production, an expression of its generous land.
