Priory of San Lorenzo

One of the oldest buildings in the city

At the top of the fortified core of Montelupo stands the Church of San Giovanni Evangelista, which in the sixteenth century hosted the Brotherhood of San Lorenzo, from which the current name derives.

The result of various construction phases between the 13th century and the mid-14th century, the church was expanded in the sixteenth century. The current facade features the classic Romanesque gabled structure, and the portal, with 14th-century forms, is made of pietra serena, topped by a brick lunette with visible fresco remains. The interior is covered with wooden trusses and completely plastered, and the apse, carved within the tower, preserves the 1284 frescoes by Corso i Buono depicting the Redeemer with Cherubim and the Miracle of San Giovanni Evangelista. At the entrance, two Gothic tempiettos from 1408 can be seen, and on one side, the chapel dedicated to San Nicola da Bari is noteworthy, frescoed with the stories of the Saint executed in 1419 by Piero di Chellino in the Florentine Late Gothic style.
In 1785, the title of San Giovanni Evangelista and its furnishings were transferred to the Dominican convent of San Niccolò, and the church became a cemetery.
Around it are the remains of the ancient castle of Montelupo and a viewpoint from which you can admire the panorama of the entire Lower Valdarno.
The monument can be visited from the outside, or during exhibitions and events.
