Priory of San Lorenzo
One of the oldest buildings in town

Uptown, in the heart of the fortified area of Montelupo, you will find the Church of San Giovanni Evangelista, now known as the Priory of San Lorenzo, after the Brotherhood of San Lorenzo that the church hosted in the 16th century.
After several construction phases between the 13th century and the mid-14th century, the church was expanded in the 16th century. The current facade features the typical Romanesque gabled structure and a 14th-century pietra serena portal, over which you can spot a brick lunette with visible fresco remains. Inside, wooden trusses cover the ceiling, the walls are fully plastered and in the apse, carved within the tower, visitors can see the frescoes by Corso i Buono from 1284, which depict the Redeemer with Cherubs and the Miracle of San Giovanni Evangelista.
Some of the remarkable standouts of the Church include also two Gothic tempiettos from 1408 near the entrance and the chapel dedicated to San Nicola da Bari on the side, covered in fresco paintings from 1419, which tell the story of the Saint and display the typically Florentine Late Gothic style of Piero di Chiellino, the artist behind these beautiful artworks.
In 1785, the name of San Giovanni Evangelista and its furnishings were transferred to the Dominican convent of San Niccolò, and the church became a cemetery.
Around it are the remains of the ancient castle of Montelupo and a viewpoint from which you can admire the panorama of the entire Lower Valdarno.
The monument can be visited from the outside, or during exhibitions and events.
