Besides being famous for its ceramic art, Montelupo Fiorentino boasts a rich culinary tradition that’s enhanced by high-quality local production. The local cuisine is simple, genuine, and deeply rooted in Montelupo’s history, landscape and traditions. Recipes like bread soup, pasta and beans and cipollata are virtually unchanged to this day, bearing witness to a gastronomic culture that requires time both to cook and to savor it: the opposite of fast food.
The town’s “osterie” (taverns) still offer several these traditional recipes, often alongside more modern options, always made with local ingredients. In Montelupo, a meal is a moment that is meant to be enjoyed slowly, to fully appreciate our authentic flavors, along with the conversations and the good wine that come with them.
Montelupo’s gastronomic tradition is deeply linked to the local artform of ceramics. An example is the Pan Bistugio, a typical sweet prepared by a well-known local pastry shop: dating back to the Renaissance, it is baked using a method similar to the one used for ceramics.
Another iconic dish is Peposo, a robust and spicy meat recipe, slowly cooked in wine in earthenware pots. Originally from Impruneta, but also very popular in Montelupo, it was the meal of the “fornacini,” the brick kiln workers, even during the construction of Brunelleschi’s Dome in Florence.
Like every authentic corner of Tuscany, Montelupo Fiorentino is also proud of its oil and wine production, an expression of its generous land.
